Polite Reminder

Fishery gates will continue to be unlocked daily at 8am, if you get to Dever before this time please do not block the gates or park on the grass. There are a couple of lay-bys very close to Dever.

The gates aren't always unlocked from the outside and members of staff cannot get to the gate to unlock them , earlier in the week a member of staff had to abandon their car in the middle of the road to unlock the gates as the gate entrance was blocked which almost resulted in them getting ran over which shouldn't be happening.

Also could we remind Anglers that you must have purchased a ticket from the lodge window before you start fishing/ Reserving a swim, anyone seen doing this will be asked to move

Thank you for reading and we hope to see you all soon!

Should be a max of 2 hours on the point, been on the fishery and seen people phone their m8's to take the peg over 😡😡😡😡

Agreed on both points. I park in lay by 1/2 mile away.

I still see the ungents are still doing the bag a swim before paying routine! It’s has always be a problem, unfortunately!

Maybe an option is to ring a loud bell every two hours, and everyone has to move to a different swim

Bag a swim...??? it's fly fishing fellas it's all about being mobile not static.

Poor show when at 7.45am there is 10 cars waiting to get on to the fishery and as the gates are opened Rays car stops half way up the drive blocking the road for all while Ray unloads his car with his rod and kit and bags the best peg before getting back in his car to park like the rest of us gentlemen fishermen who know about etiquette.

Dever Blog October 2020
The month started off a bit wild, with rain and gales, but that’s what we should expect come autumn. The leaves are coming off the trees and it’s a bumper crop of acorns along the access road.
The fishing has been excellent and there’s no reason for this not to continue through winter. What has been really interesting for many weeks has been the number of fish high in the water, and rising almost every day on Willow lake. Anglers adventurous enough to fish dries and emergers have had fantastic sport.
Both lakes remain very clear and at last the weed growth is slowing, but for sure there will be another cut soon. It’s interesting how some of our anglers love fishing around the weed beds and others would prefer the fishery to be devoid of all weeds, marginal growth and trees, but we try hard to strike a balance to make the fishery interesting and cared for. Indeed some of our anglers like to take a very close attention to detail around the banks and that has included a couple of seemingly inadvertent immersions, such that we now are thinking of an award, to be known as the Dever Dip!
No names of course but maybe Neil and Danny can suggest some suitable wording!
As ever, the bird life here is of interest, and although the swallows and martins are now on their migrations, a recent sighting of a merlin was a bonus. A family of swans decided to use the lakes as their own personal training location to teach the youngsters to fly, and that involved many trial runs against the wind on Willow lake as they slowly mastered the art of getting those large bodies into the air.
Now, talking of large bodies. If you follow our facebook page then you will see that there has been a succession of monster rainbows with a current seasons best of 22 - 4. There’s every possibility of this being bettered and one thing’s for sure, lots of anglers are going to get their personal best this winter.
Continuing changes to the way we all have to live our lives mean that it’s imperative you please adhere to protocol and keep your distance as well as maintain hygiene. For the foreseeable future the ticket sales will continue to be done through the office window via the decking. Only one person at a time into the lodge for the toilet facilities. We fully appreciate that some people struggle with the requirements but that’s the way it is and all of us here want to keep free of the virus and continue to keep Dever Springs fully operational.

Nice read as always

Great right up Dever and I so hope to have the pleasure to hook and land one of your huge trout 🙏😜👍🏻

Well done on the covid requirements guys and keeping the lakes open, now were looking towards winter is there a possibility of a microwave so anglers can warm a pie etc up that could then be eaten outside?

Amazing photo, love the monthly blog too😉

the weed is essential for clarity and insect life, well done for keeping the balance.

Stu It’s the only fishery in the uk that allows flippers and a spear gun Too may big fish 😂🤷‍♂️🎣

Recently travelled over 600 miles round trip to fish this venue and wasn't disappointed, great place, great people, will definitely make it an annual pilgrimage 👍

Weird I had 1 today also😂

Yes, we thought we were in the car park at Twickenham for a moment. By the way, son and I caught five fish today between 5.5 and 7 pounds which we forgot to record.

Ha, enjoy lads.

DEVER BLOG September 2020
With autumn fast approaching we are coming into what is often the best time of the year with the water so much cooler and the fish in tip top order. Already we get good comments about how much harder the fish fight now than in the heat of summer and it’s all down to water temperature and oxygen levels. The simple fact of physics is that the warmer the water the less oxygen it can hold. And nothing we, as fishery people can do, will alter that fact.
Stuart is quietly pleased with some of this winter’s rainbow stock and what you may not appreciate is that he is constantly working two years ahead and juggling stock levels, feed requirements, pond space and grading days just so that right through the year there is a regular supply of fish in the 4 plus range, to maintain our 6lb plus average.
So, what to expect this month, other than the fishing? Well, we should soon see the swallows and martins gathering prior to their epic flights to Africa and the question for Amanda at the lodge is whether the second batch of baby swallows above the office window will be fledged in time. You will likely notice the amount of fruit in the hedgerows as you come to Dever and it does look like being a bumper year. Already the wood pigeons appear to be stuffed and spend a lot of time sitting on the fences.
One of the very best things about running a fishery is the people who come here, and who over time become great friends. The banter before they go out to fish and then at the end of their day is often rather special and when occasionally someone can no longer get here through ill health it’s a sad time for us all.
Our Pete is of a vintage era and knows just about anyone there is to know in the fishing world. Hearing him talk of days when he met and fished with the likes of Dick Walker in the early 70’s is to have a glimpse into fishing history.
Mind you, he may be ancient, but he can mostly keep pace with young Jamie when it comes to grass cutting or weed pulling. That said, Jamie often scores a good one, just because he’s quicker, and between them there’s a lot of micky taking.
So, what’s coming up next at Dever? Well, hopefully some structural improvements, maybe the last of the weed cuts and then the excitement of wondering how many 20’s will come out this winter.
The wet times have kept the grass looking great, no brown patches this year, and we try hard to keep disturbance to a minimum when cutting. As for the fishing it is really all about observation and do please remember that small flies do work here and the past month with fish rising every day on Willow Lake the dries and emergers have scored time and again to anyone willing to try. When the fish can clearly be seen cruising just sub surface and constantly rising it ought to be a sign to change from the big heavy lures.
That said, do please stick with the minimum 6lb leader as you don’t want to lose that trophy.

Dever Blog Aug 2020
Let’s be positive in this difficult time. Covid 19 and its restrictions are going to be with us all for some time yet but we can enjoy going fishing. Here at Dever we continue to keep the fishery fully operational and are hugely grateful to you for your support and continue to keep you informed.
So, what’s been happening here? Well, the July weed cut went quite smoothly with both lakes being cut the same day. That was a first for Stuart with the only downside being that the extra hours out on the weed boat meant that the tops of his knees were sunburnt! Cue for very little sympathy from Jamie and Peter who were exhausted from pulling the weed net.
You probably notice the pile of logs in the car park and that’s from the ‘trimmed’ oak which lost a huge branch at 2 am one day. It was so fortunate that it happened at night. The crew (One Two Tree) doing the clear up work were completed in a day and did an amazing job with some very impressive machinery. Our apologies if any of you were affected by this. Because the weather has been so much cooler (on average) than last July the fishing has remained very steady. Hot and muggy days make it more testing and require much smaller flies. Being quite breezy has helped too and on many days the fish are up in the ripple on Willow Lake, but hardly anyone ever tries a dry.
Looks like we are going into some extreme heat for the start of August so do please take precautions in the sun and be ever more vigilant with social distancing. Many of our anglers are in the age group which needs to take special care and ALL anglers need to respect each other.
As for the wildlife we share our countryside with it’s been an interesting month with water voles being spotted in the river Dever and that’s a welcome return of this lovely little rodent. You likely saw the swallow’s nest immediately above the ticket window and their brood of four is now free flying with all the others. Haven’t seen any swifts this summer but other places have them so that’s good to hear. As always there are lots of wood pigeons around. Recently, when Pete was out guiding on some
lakes for carp on fly one of his guests hooked a pigeon in flight while casting. That was an interesting tussle for the bivvy boys to witness and the subsequent ‘release’ pics ended with a feather in the angler’s hat. Stuart has continued his barbel trips to the Wye in search of a double and was so “pleased” when he took one of our regulars (Richard Callender) who promptly had a 10 - 5!
Jamie meanwhile has been having great fun fishing the Solent area for mackerel off the shore. Pete spent most of July pining for his lost trip to Alaska, but is already making plans as far ahead as 2022. If you read Trout and Salmon magazine you will see his regular fishery features. The most recent one was Lakedown in Sussex where he and Roger Daltry shared stories from their days at fishery managers conferences. This next month, weather permitting, we should continue to see good fishing and there are some lovely quality fish on site which will continue to be part of the daily stocking. Not quite so busy now but do please continue to book in as there are some fully booked days and taking a chance we can accommodate you is really not worth it for the sake of an e mail or phone message, especially if you have a long journey.
